How many grams are there in an ounce?
What is a gram?
The definition of gram (sometimes gramme) is a unit of mass, the symbol for which is ‘g’.
We list our gold prices by gold weighed in grams.
Confusingly however, the traditional unit of measurement most commonly used in the gold market is the troy ounce.
In the past, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, different systems were used for measuring mass and weight in Britain, with ‘troy weight’ being used for precious metals, along with avoirdupois weight, used for most other purposes; and apothecaries' weight, now defunct. The metric system is now generally used for scientific measurements.
The use of the troy pound (373.2417216 g) was abolished in Britain in 1879, with the avoirdupois pound becoming the primary unit of weight, however the troy ounce (31.103476 8g) and its decimal subdivisions were retained.
1 troy ounce weighs precisely 31.1034768 grams which is larger than an ‘avoirdupois’ ounce weighing 28.35 grams.
